In a high-stakes legal drama, a High Court judge just told Leigh Day, the law firm accused of playing fast and loose with £6 million from a Shell pollution settlement, to suck it up and get on with the show. The Nigerian claimants, reeling from Shell’s eco-destruction in the Niger Delta, argued they hadn’t received a formal heads-up about the trial date. But the judge wasn’t buying it.
Leigh Day, the firm representing the Bodo community against the oil behemoth Shell, settled for a cool £55 million in 2014 after the delightful oil spills of 2008 and 2009. £25 million was for individual claims, while £20 million was set aside for the community. The firm is accused of sneaky disbursements, diverting £6 million to an NGO and four Nigerian legal practices without a green light. read more

In a rare turn of events, Shell has managed to pull its head out of the sand long enough to strike a deal with its workers in Alberta, Canada. The Unifor union announced on Wednesday that its members have ratified a new four-year agreement that includes a 16% wage increase. Because who knew that actually paying workers could prevent strikes?
Dodging a Bullet:
The agreement comes after Shell’s Scotford-based facility workers overwhelmingly voted in favor of a work stoppage in late June. It seems the threat of an actual strike was enough to get Shell to the negotiating table. Unifor also mentioned the possibility of further wage gains and improvements to time off for statutory holidays and various union-based leaves. Looks like Shell finally remembered that workers are people too. read more

In another classic move from our favorite eco-villain, Shell has gone all-in on liquefied natural gas (LNG), trying to plug the gap left by its exit from Russia in 2022. With a series of deals, Shell’s CEO Wael Sawan is betting big on LNG, all while quietly stepping away from those pesky renewable energy projects.
Filling the Russian Void:
Shell’s new projects in the United Arab Emirates and Trinidad and Tobago, along with snapping up a hefty trading portfolio, are all part of Sawan’s master plan to boost LNG volumes by up to 20 million metric tons per year (mtpa) between 2023 and 2030. These moves help Shell recover from the 2.5 mtpa shortfall after ditching Russia’s Sakhalin LNG project, which led to a 5% dip in liquefaction volumes last year. Because nothing says resilience like swapping one geopolitical mess for another. read more

In the latest installment of “Shell’s Quest for Global Domination,” the European energy behemoth has inked a deal to invest in Abu Dhabi’s Ruwais liquefied natural-gas (LNG) project. Alongside equally virtuous partners BP, TotalEnergies, and Japan’s Mitsui, Shell is securing its place in the race to expand the UAE’s LNG production capacity.
Shell’s Slice of the Pie:
Shell proudly announced it would grab a 10% stake in the Ruwais project, matching the stakes of BP, TotalEnergies, and Mitsui. Not to be outdone, Shell will also buy a cool 1 million metric tons of LNG annually, while Mitsui will settle for a mere 600,000 tons. Details of the financial arrangements? Oh, those remain as opaque as ever. read more

Gas, Gas, and More Gas:
Shell announced on Tuesday that it’s moving forward with the Manatee gas field project in Trinidad, aiming to beef up its liquefied natural gas (LNG) empire. Nestled in the East Coast Marine Area, one of the Caribbean’s busiest gas-producing zones, the Manatee field is part of the cross-border Loran-Manatee discovery shared with Venezuela. This gem holds about 10 trillion cubic feet (tcf) of natural gas, with Trinidad sitting on a modest 2.7 tcf of that stash. read more

In the latest chapter of “Shell’s Ever-Expanding Environmental Impact,” John Wood Group PLC has snagged a massive engineering contract for Shell’s Prelude Floating Liquified Natural Gas (FLNG) facility in Western Australia. Because clearly, the world’s largest floating offshore gas facility is exactly what we need right now.
Brownfield Engineering Extravaganza:
This shiny new contract has Wood providing brownfield engineering, procurement, and construction management (EPCm) solutions for Prelude. In other words, they’ll be making sure this gigantic floating gas factory operates smoothly while Shell continues its legacy of prioritizing profits over the planet. read more

In today’s episode of “Shell’s Next Big Environmental Screw-Up,” the oil giant is seeking government permission to drill up to five offshore wells off the west coast of South Africa. That’s right, folks—because clearly, our oceans aren’t polluted enough, and the wildlife isn’t nearly as threatened as it could be.
Environmental Circus:
According to a draft scoping report from environmental consultancy SLR, Shell Offshore Upstream South Africa B.V. and its partners are eagerly awaiting the green light from the government to start wreaking havoc in the Northern Cape Ultra Deep Block (NCUD) in the Orange Basin. This region’s depths range from 2,500 to 3,200 meters—perfect for deep-sea drilling and even deeper levels of corporate irresponsibility. read more

In the latest edition of “What the F***, Shell?”, our favourite oil behemoth is bracing for a second-quarter faceplant of up to $2 billion in impairments. Yes, that’s billion with a “B.” This colossal write-down is primarily due to Shell’s decision to hit the snooze button on a major biofuels project in Rotterdam and additional blunders in Singapore.
Dutch Disaster:
Let’s start with the Rotterdam fiasco. Shell had big dreams of producing 820,000 tonnes of “sustainable aviation fuel” and “renewable diesel” from waste. Sounds green and shiny, right? But instead of following through, Shell decided to put the project on ice, without bothering to mention when—or if—it might thaw. This brilliant move alone is costing them between $0.6 and $1 billion. Way to go, team! read more

In the latest episode of “Shell Can’t Catch a Break,” the oil giant is poised to take a hit of up to $2 billion in post-tax impairments. Why? Because they’re pausing construction on their much-touted biofuels plant in Rotterdam and offloading their chemicals refinery in Singapore. All this drama while Europe’s largest energy company grapples with weak market conditions and a downturn in their golden goose: gas trading.
Apparently, Shell’s integrated-gas segment, usually the crown jewel of their profit empire, isn’t looking too hot this quarter. They predict results will be lower than the first quarter, where they enjoyed a cushy $3.68 billion in adjusted earnings. Seasonality, they say. But hey, at least it might match last year’s second quarter of $2.5 billion. Small victories, right? read more

Ever since Shell announced its multibillion-dollar ethane cracker plant in Beaver Court, Pennsylvania, we’ve been watching this environmental horror show unfold.
Thanks to the Environmental Law Institute’s publication, “Ethane Trading in the Upper Ohio Valley: Potential Impacts, Regulatory Requirements, and Opportunities for Public Engagement,” we have a comprehensive rundown of the toxic cocktail Shell is generously pumping into the air. If you’ve ever wanted a full list of chemicals that sound like they belong in a supervillain’s lair, flip to pages 6 to 11. Benzene, toluene, and ethylbenzene are just a few of the nasties on the roster, guaranteed to make your hair curl – or worse, depending on your proximity to the plant. read more

In the latest saga of “How Shell Continues to Outdo Itself,” two former employees decided to play pirate and made off with millions in gas oil from Shell’s Pulau Bukom facility. Yes, you heard that right – these two masterminds, Muzaffar Ali Khan Muhamad Akram, 42, and Koh Choon Wei, 40, swindled Shell out of enough fuel to make Captain Jack Sparrow jealous.
Muzaffar, who managed to siphon off gas oil worth nearly $120 million, pocketed a cool $1.3 million. His partner-in-crime, Koh, snagged over $101 million worth of oil and walked away with at least $1 million. And what did they do with their ill-gotten gains? Opened a halal Japanese restaurant, invested in property, bought a Volkswagen, and even started a barbershop. Who knew crime could lead to such diverse business ventures? read more

In a move that surprised absolutely no one, Shell has decided to slam the brakes on the construction of one of Europe’s largest biofuel plants. This groundbreaking facility in Rotterdam was supposed to churn out 820,000 tonnes of biofuels a year, half of which would be sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) made from delightful waste cooking oil and animal fat. You know, the stuff that makes your fries taste great.
Airlines, who were giddy at the thought of selling “low-carbon” flights, are now left scratching their heads. But don’t worry, Shell assures us this is just a “temporary pause.” According to Huibert Vigeveno, Shell’s downstream, renewables, and energy solutions director, “Temporarily pausing on-site construction now will allow us to assess the most commercial way forward for the project.” Translation: “We’re figuring out how to make more money off this before pretending to care about the planet again.” read more

In a move that’s more shocking than discovering water is wet, a growing horde of European institutional investors are ditching oil and gas stocks like they’re yesterday’s trash. The latest to jump on this bandwagon of eco-consciousness is Denmark’s largest commercial pension fund, PFA, which manages a whopping $110 billion. They’ve decided to offload their $170 million stake in Shell, citing the company’s pathetic attempt at renewable energy investment. read more

Welcome to Beaver County, Pennsylvania, where Shell’s ethane cracker plant has turned the community into a living nightmare. Residents are now basking in the glow of carcinogens and other delightful chemicals that can cause blood disorders, convulsions, and breathing problems. Some folks have even fled the area.
Well, well, well, what do we have here? Shell, the beloved corporate villain, has once again proven that it’s never too late to outdo itself in the race to the bottom. Welcome to Beaver County, Pennsylvania, where Shell’s ethane cracker plant has turned the community into a living nightmare. Who could’ve guessed? Oh, wait – everyone.
What’s Happening?
In a dazzling display of corporate gaslighting, Shell promised Beaver County that its ethane cracker plant would be a magical land of employment, tax revenue, and economic bliss. So, Pennsylvania, in its infinite wisdom, handed Shell a cool $1.65 billion to set up shop. Fast forward two years, and surprise! The plant has racked up 23 violations of air quality and clean water standards, like a delinquent teenager collecting detention slips. read more

Shell Gives the Green Light to Carbon Capture Shenanigans in Alberta – Whoop-de-doo!
So, the bigwigs at Shell have decided to throw us another bone and announced not one, but two shiny new carbon capture projects in Alberta. Because, apparently, the oil giant known for its greed and pollution suddenly wants to save the planet. Cue the applause.
The company proudly declared the launch of the Polaris carbon capture project at its Scotford refinery and chemicals complex near Fort Saskatchewan. And let’s not forget the Atlas Carbon Storage Hub, a grand partnership with Atco EnPower. The first phase will allegedly store the CO2 captured by the Polaris project. Because what’s better than an oil giant patting itself on the back for trying to clean up its own mess? read more

Shell is at it again. This time, the oil behemoth has decided to bless Canada with not one, but two carbon capture and storage (CCS) projects. Bravo, Shell! Because nothing screams “environmental savior” like a company that has spent decades polluting the planet.
On June 26, Shell’s Canadian unit announced its grand plan to build these CCS projects in a valiant effort to reduce emissions from its own operations. The projects, named Polaris and Atlas Carbon Storage Hub, sound like something out of a superhero comic. Unfortunately, the reality is less heroic. read more
